The 2025 WTT Champions Macau<\/strong> has concluded, yet the discussions around it have not subsided, particularly concerning the men\u2019s team. Although the final outcome saw Wang Chuqin<\/strong> claim the title with a dominant performance, the other four rising stars all suffered defeats to foreign opponents<\/strong>\u2014including World No. 1 Lin Shidong<\/strong>, No. 9 Xiang Peng<\/strong>, National Championships men\u2019s singles champion Huang Youzheng<\/strong>, and another hopeful Chen Yuanyu<\/strong>. Many fans sighed: \u201cMust we always pin all our hopes on Wang Chuqin alone?\u201d<\/em><\/p>

Lingering Age Gap in the Men\u2019s Team<\/h3>

As early as the Tokyo Olympic cycle<\/strong>, the Chinese men\u2019s team already showed a clear aging issue<\/strong> at the top. Among the three main players who competed in Japan, both Ma Long<\/strong> and Xu Xin<\/strong> were over 30, setting a record for the oldest lineup. By the Paris Olympics<\/strong>, the average age of the three core men\u2019s players had dropped, yet the fact that 35-year-old Ma Long<\/strong> was still selected only further highlighted the lack of young replacements.<\/p>

Among the four rising stars, Lin Shidong<\/strong><\/a> is the highest-ranked. In the new cycle, he has captured several international titles, yet he consistently lags behind against the three main foreign rivals\u2014Hugo Calderano<\/strong>, Tomokazu Harimoto<\/strong>, and Alexis Lebrun<\/strong>. Recently, he has also suffered defeats to players he used to dominate, such as Truls Moregardh<\/strong>, Qiu Dang<\/strong>, and Kristian Karlsson<\/strong>.<\/p>

What frustrates fans even more is that since becoming World No. 1 in February<\/strong>, Lin has not won a single men\u2019s singles title. He has lost to teammates like Wang Chuqin and Liang Jingkun in internal battles and has collapsed repeatedly in foreign matchups. These singles setbacks have even affected his doubles performance\u2014he hasn\u2019t won a men\u2019s doubles title recently.
