Asian Table Tennis Championships Squad Announced!Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha Lead the Chinese Table Tennis Team, While Several World Champions from China and Japan Are Absent

The 2025 Asian Table Tennis Team Championships will kick off in Bhubaneswar, India on October 11 and run until the 15th. The participating associations have now released their lineups. The Chinese Table Tennis Team, led by current World No.1 players Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha, will take part. Notably missing from the list are former World Champions Lin Gaoyuan, Zhu Yuling, Mima Ito, and Miu Hirano. Long-time Chinese stars Ma Long, Fan Zhendong, and Chen Meng, who have stepped away from international competition, also continue their absence. Korea’s Lim Jonghoon failed to make the cut, while the “mystery team” North Korea will return to the stage. Full details are as follows:

【New Format】

This year, the Asian Championships will adopt a new system. Previously, all seven events (team, singles, doubles, and mixed) were contested simultaneously, leaving athletes physically and mentally drained. From this year, the team and individual events are split, with the team competition assigned to Bhubaneswar, India.

At last year’s tournament in Astana, Kazakhstan, China suffered a rare setback, taking only two titles:

  • Men’s Team (Wang Chuqin, Liang Jingkun, Lin Gaoyuan, Lin Shidong, Zhou Qihao)

  • Mixed Doubles (Lin Shidong / Kuai Man)

China fell short in men’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s team, women’s singles, and women’s doubles. As a result, fans are eager to see whether the Chinese Table Tennis Team can reclaim these lost gold medals this year.

【Chinese Team】

As mentioned, China will not compete for individual titles in Bhubaneswar, but the team event will be the true test.

  • Men’s Team: Wang Chuqin, Lin Shidong, Liang Jingkun, Xiang Peng, Zhou Qihao.
(Compared to last year, Xiang Peng replaces Lin Gaoyuan, while the others remain unchanged.)

  • Women’s Team: Sun Yingsha, Wang Manyu, Chen Xingtong, Kuai Man, Wang Yidi.
(At the last edition, Wang Manyu withdrew for personal reasons, with Chen Xingtong stepping in. This year, Wang Manyu returns, Chen Xingtong stays, while Shi Xunyao is replaced.)

【Japanese Team】

  • Men’s Team: Tomokazu Harimoto, Hiroto Shunsuke, Daito Shinozuka, Shunsuke Togami, Yuta Tanaka.

  • Women’s Team: Miwa Harimoto, Satsuki Odo, Hina Hayata, Honoka Hashimoto, Miyu Nagasaki.

Compared with last year, Mima Ito and Miu Hirano are missing, while Honoka Hashimoto (a defensive chopper) and Miyu Nagasaki are added.

As the defending women’s team champions, Japan remains the biggest threat to China. Despite losing two World Champions, Hashimoto’s chopping style is highly dangerous—she has already broken through Chinese defenses 17 times in the past year and is not to be underestimated.

【Korean Team】

Korea held internal trials for the Asian Championships.

  • Men’s Team: Jang Woojin, An Jaehyun, Oh Junsung, Cho Daesung, Park Kyuhyun.

  • Women’s Team: Shin Yubin, Lee Eunhye, Kim Nayeong, Choi Hyojoo, Yang Hayeon.

Olympic and World Championships mixed doubles bronze medalist Lim Jonghoon did not make the cut, losing out in domestic competition.

【North Korean Team】

The “mystery squad” North Korea is also set to participate.

  • Men’s Team: An Seungsu, Ri Jongshik, Jon Jongnam.

  • Women’s Team: Kim Kum Yong, Choe Jong Myong, Cha Su Yong, Pak Su Gyong.

The women’s squad in particular poses a challenge to China, with Kim Kum Yong, last year’s women’s singles champion, being the one to watch.

【Macau Team】

Macau is relatively weaker and unlikely to challenge for medals. Their only top-level player, former Chinese World Champion Zhu Yuling, will not participate.

  • Men’s Team: Chan Tsz Hin, Ho Chun Fai, Cheng Hung Wai.

  • Women’s Team: Cheong Chi In, Chong Iok Teng, Wong Chong Leng, Sek Wai Lei.

【Overall Outlook】

The East Asian teams (China, Chinese Taipei, Japan, Korea, and North Korea) remain the strongest forces in Asia, and any of them could reach the semifinals. Hong Kong’s level has declined significantly, while Mongolia is even less competitive.

Elsewhere in Asia:

  • India’s women’s team has risen considerably.

  • Thailand also has solid potential.

  • Iran, Singapore, and Kazakhstan could produce surprises in the men’s competition.

With the rosters now set, the big questions remain:

  • Can the Chinese women’s team reclaim the title they lost last year?

  • Will the Chinese men’s team succeed in defending their crown?

The answers will unfold in Bhubaneswar—let’s wait and see!
