Asian Table Tennis Championships: Sun Yingsha Dominates! Sweeps Miwa Harimoto 3-0 in the Final, Chinese Women’s Team One Step Away from Victory

The 2025 Asian Table Tennis Championships are in full swing. On the evening of October 15 (Beijing time), the women’s team final between China and Japan entered its second match — a high-profile showdown between Sun Yingsha (World No. 1) and Miwa Harimoto (World No. 7). In a rematch of last year’s women’s team final, where Sun had suffered defeat, this time the Chinese Table Tennis Team’s ace gave her Japanese opponent no chance, sweeping the match 3-0 and helping China take a 2-0 overall lead. The team now stands just one step away from reclaiming the championship title.

[Match Highlights]

Miwa Harimoto, born in 2008, is still very young but already has an impressive career. In last year’s Asian Championships women’s team final, she was the key player behind Japan’s triumph — defeating both Wang Yidi and Sun Yingsha to secure two crucial points and lead Japan to gold.

However, over the past year, Harimoto’s momentum has noticeably slowed, and her record against the main players of the Chinese Table Tennis Team has worsened. This time, in the 2025 Asian Championships team final, she has been positioned as Japan’s No. 2 singles player (with defensive chopper Honoka Hashimoto serving as the No. 1), and few expected her to repeat last year’s heroics against Sun Yingsha.

[Match Progress]

At the start of the match, Harimoto came out firing, using bold long-ball attacks to disrupt Sun’s rhythm. Sun fell behind 1-4 and 2-5 early, but soon began forcing errors from Harimoto, closing the gap to 4-5 and 5-6. After equalizing at 6-6, Sun scored two more points to take control of the pace. Leading 10-8, she missed one game point due to a forehand error but quickly regrouped, blocking a counterattack to win 11-8 and take the first game.

In the second game, both players battled intensely at the start. Sun drew first blood but Harimoto held close. After leading 5-4, Sun ramped up her aggression, breaking through Harimoto’s defense with five consecutive points to reach 10-4 and earn six game points. Despite conceding one point on serve, Sun sealed the game 11-5 with strong forehand attacks, taking a 2-0 lead and moving within one game of victory.

In the third game, Sun once again started well with two quick points but was soon tied, and then trailed 2-4. Facing an all-out Harimoto who was fighting to stay alive, Sun remained composed and regained the lead 6-5, forcing Japan to call a timeout. After returning, Harimoto leveled again at 6-6 and 7-7, but Sun responded decisively with three straight points to reach 10-7, then converted her first match point to win 11-7 and complete the 3-0 sweep.

With this win, the Chinese Table Tennis Team now leads Japan 2-0 overall. In the first match, Wang Manyu came from behind to defeat Honoka Hashimoto 3-1, and Sun Yingsha’s dominant 3-0 victory over Miwa Harimoto brought China to the brink of triumph.

Next up, Kuai Man will face Hina Hayata in the third match. Fans are hopeful that the young Chinese player can withstand the pressure, finish the job, and help the team reclaim the women’s team gold medal with a decisive 3-0 sweep.
