PING Super League: Lin Shidong wins big! Sweeps World Champions 3-0, Liang Jingkun suffers back-to-back defeats!

On the evening of 15 December Beijing time, the Chinese table tennis team once again broke out in a battle of world champions, with world number two 19-year-old Lin Sidong representing Huangshi Base-Huaxin taking to the field against world number five Liang Jingkun (representing Shandong Weiqiao Xiangshang Sports Team), resulting in Lin taking a 3-0 victory by a wide margin, while Liang Jingkun suffered his third defeat on the same day and was in very poor form, with the result that Lin was able to win by a wide margin. Please see below for details of the battle.

Lin Sidong and Liang Jingkun are both current Chinese table tennis team mainstays, with the former only 19 years old but has already topped many international tournaments, and not long ago won the Mixed Team World Cup in Chengdu with his teammates, officially joining the Chinese table tennis team’s mainstay, and is now ranked ahead of the long-established Liang Jingkun (who is now 28 years old).

Prior to this, Huangshi Huaxin and Shandong Weiqiao Xiangshang Sports had won all five of their men’s team matches, but the latter’s three main players, Wang Chuqin and Lin Yunru, were absent from the match against Huangshi Huaxin, which put the pressure on World Champion Liang Jingkun, who had only lost two sets in a row during the day (his doubles partner Lin Yunru was defeated by Lin Gaoyuan/Chen Guanyu 1-3, and singles partner Chen Guanyu lost to him 1-3).

The match started with a high quality attack between the two players who are familiar with each other, with Lin getting the first 3 points, recovering 2 points and then continuing to break the defence with his superb backhand, and not losing out on in-form control, including a passive high ball on the retreating side of the court, to eventually take the lead 11-7.

In the second game, Liang Jingkun took the initiative and avoided being caught out by Lin Sidong, scoring three points in quick succession, but was then chased down by his opponent to level the match at 4-4. Liang Jingkun then regained the advantage through in-table control, but it was Lin Shidong who was the more consistent player and eventually pushed Liang Jingkun to the brink with another 11-9 win.

In the third set, Liang Jingkun was unable to take much advantage of the topspin hold, and Shandong Weiqiao Xiangshang Sports Team called for a time-out. After the battle resumed, Liang continued to play catch-up in an attempt to close the gap, but after the middle game, Lin Shidong gradually closed the gap, but was soon met with a fierce counter-attack that saw him tied at 9-9, but eventually ended the match at 11-9, thus sealing the win, and giving Liang his third defeat of the day.
