Wang Chuqin Sweeps Hugo 4-0 to Claim the Title!Battles Through Alone, “ShaTou” Reunite at the Summit

On the evening of September 14, Beijing time, the final battle of the WTT Macao Champions — the men’s singles final — came to a close. Chinese Table Tennis Team player Wang Chuqin, who fought his way into both the semifinals and final as the team’s sole representative, went all the way and ultimately defeated Brazilian star Hugo Calderano 4-0 to seize the crown. Following his teammate Sun Yingsha’s triumph in the women’s singles, Wang secured another championship for the Chinese team. Thus, the long-time doubles partners once again “met at the peak” of this event. Full details are below.

Wang Chuqin, born in 2000, is a former world No.1 and currently ranked No.2; Hugo Calderano, born in 1996, is ranked No.4 in the world. Both players achieved their singles world championship dreams this year — Wang Chuqin won the Doha World Championships, defeating Hugo in the final, while Hugo had previously claimed the Macao World Cup title, where he eliminated Wang Chuqin in the semifinals.

In their past seven international encounters, Wang Chuqin held a slight edge with five wins to two losses. Adding to that, Wang won their most recent clash at the Doha World Championships, so the pressure was likely heavier on Hugo this time.

【Road to the Final】

  • Wang Chuqin: 3-1 Matsushima Sora (Japan), 3-1 Jonathan Groth (Denmark), 4-0 Lin Yun-Ju (Chinese Taipei), 4-0 Jang Woojin (Korea)

  • Hugo Calderano: 3-0 An Jaehyun (Korea), 3-1 Qiu Dang (Germany), 4-2 Patrick Franziska (Germany), 4-0 Jonathan Groth Lind (Denmark)

Looking at their routes, Wang’s path was relatively smoother, as no opponent managed to take more than one game from him. Hugo faced a tougher challenge against Franziska, though he was not dragged into a deciding game, and his form remained solid overall. Still, Wang had to prepare for Hugo’s fierce challenge in the final.

【Match Recap】

The match began with Wang Chuqin conceding the first two points, but he quickly utilized his close-table speed to reverse the score 4-2. Hugo responded with powerful mid-to-far-table loops, regaining an 8-6 lead. Wang then controlled the rally with short play followed by explosive attacks, scoring four straight points to earn game point. After missing one opportunity, he pressured Hugo down the middle to close out the opener 11-9.

In the second game, Wang rode his momentum, jumping to a 2-0 start. Though Hugo closed the gap to 4-3, Wang steadied himself, extending the lead to 8-4 and later 10-6. Missing one point, he still sealed it 11-7 to take a two-game lead.

The third game saw Hugo’s form dip, committing errors on both offense and defense to fall behind 0-4. Wang then made some mistakes, allowing Hugo to rally and even lead 7-5. At the key moment, Wang surged with four straight points to make it 9-7. Hugo tied it at 9-9, but Wang held firm on his serve, striking twice to edge it 11-9 and push Hugo to the brink.

In the fourth game, Wang surged ahead 5-2, forcing Hugo to call a timeout. It did little to stop the momentum — Wang stretched the lead to 8-2. Though Hugo clawed back two points, Wang quickly reached 10-4 and clinched victory 11-4, sealing the 4-0 sweep. With this, Wang defended the honor of Chinese men’s singles and crowned himself champion.

【Match Notes】

Before the men’s singles final, Chinese player Sun Yingsha had already claimed the women’s singles crown with a narrow 4-3 win over teammate Wang Manyu.

According to the schedule, the Chinese Table Tennis Team will next compete at the WTT Beijing Grand Smash, to be held from September 25 to October 5. All five events will be contested, and fans look forward to the team delivering great performances in the capital.
