WTT Yokohama: Chen Xingtong Off to a Flying Start!

Sweeps Chinese-born Star Yuan Jianan 3-0 in Dominant Opener

On August 8, Beijing time, the WTT Yokohama Champions tournament continued, with Chinese world champion Chen Xingtong making her debut against French Chinese-born veteran Yuan Jianan. Chen displayed superior control and consistency, sealing a convincing 3-0 victory to secure another spot for Team China in the women’s singles round of 16.

Born in 1997, Chen Xingtong is currently ranked No. 3 in the world. While she is firmly established as a mainstay of the Chinese national team, her singles results in major events have not been at the very top, and she is still seeking a breakthrough in her career.

Her opponent Yuan Jianan, born in 1985 in Henan, China, uses a rare style with inverted rubber on both sides but employs a quick, flat-hitting forehand and a sharp backhand punch. She has notable career wins over Olympic champions Wang Manyu and Mima Ito, and earlier this year shocked the table tennis world by defeating Chinese world champion Wang Yidi at the World Cup. However, in their only previous meeting earlier this year, Yuan lost 0-3 to Chen.

Match Summary

  • Game 1 – Chen started aggressively, keeping rallies short to avoid being caught by Yuan’s quick forehand and backhand attacks. She handled Yuan’s signature high-toss serve calmly, building and holding a steady lead. At 10-6, Chen converted her first game point to win 11-6.

  • Game 2 – After falling behind 0-1, Chen responded with a three-point streak. Her hooking serves troubled Yuan significantly, and Chen stretched the gap to 7-3. With four game points at 10-4, she closed it out 11-4 to go up 2-0.

  • Game 3 – Chen raced to a 3-0 lead, forcing Yuan to call a timeout. Resuming play, Chen maintained pressure, pulling ahead 6-1. Though Yuan clawed back three points, Chen surged again to 9-4 and sealed the match 11-5, completing the sweep.

Technically, Chen is known for her all-round, balanced game with world-class skills in every area. However, her offensive initiative and maximum shot quality are slightly below teammates like Chen Meng, Sun Yingsha, and Wang Manyu, which has made it hard to crack the top three in China’s pecking order. Whether she can earn a spot at the 2028 Olympics remains to be seen—but for now, her performance in Yokohama shows she’s ready to fight for it.
