WTT Yokohama: Wang Manyu Opens with 3–1 Win Over Star Opponent – China Now Has 9 Players Through, 2 Eliminated

On August 8, the WTT Yokohama Champions tournament continued, with Olympic champion and Team China mainstay Wang Manyu making her debut against Puerto Rican star Adriana Díaz. Having already beaten Díaz six times in previous encounters, Wang extended her dominance with another 3–1 victory, becoming the ninth Chinese player to reach the singles Round of 16.

Match Recap

Game 1:
Wang started aggressively, using her balanced forehand-backhand game to neutralize Díaz’s backhand punch. Racing to a 10–5 lead, she easily closed out the game 11–5.

Game 2:
Wang’s error count rose sharply, and she fell behind 5–10. Díaz converted on her first game point to level the match, winning 11–5.

Game 3:
After regaining control and cutting down errors, Wang dominated, surging to a 10–3 lead and sealing the game 11–3, putting Díaz on the brink.

Game 4:
Wang led 3–1, prompting a Puerto Rican timeout. Díaz fought back to 4–4, but Wang pulled ahead 9–5. Despite a brief lapse on a high-ball miss, she reached match point at 10–6 and finished it 11–6 to secure the win.

Chinese Team Performance So Far

China entered 12 players in Yokohama. Of the 11 who have played so far:

  • Men’s Singles: Lin Shidong, Wang Chuqin, and Xiang Peng advanced; Chen Yuanyu (lost to Wang Chuqin) and Xue Fei (lost to Sweden’s Truls Möregårdh) were eliminated.

  • Women’s Singles: Wang Manyu, Chen Xingtong, Kuai Man, Wang Yidi, Chen Yi, and Shi Xunyao are all unbeaten.

Only Sun Yingsha has yet to make her debut. She will face Korean-born star Zhu Qianxi on the evening of August 8. Fans will be watching closely to see if Team China can continue its strong run.
