Two Face-Soft Punch balsa table tennis blade (1)

6 Months with the SANWEI Two Face – Soft Punch: A Defensive Blade That Frustrates Attackers

I’ve been using the SANWEI Two Face – Soft Punch for the past 6 months, mainly in defensive and control-oriented setups. To be honest, this blade surprised me more than I expected.

At first glance, it looks like a very specialized balsa blade—and it is—but after spending enough time with it, I started to understand why some defensive players become completely attached to this kind of feeling.

The biggest word I’d use to describe it is:
“absorption.”

The Balsa Core Changes Everything

The core of this blade is built around an extremely thick AAA-grade balsa structure, and you can feel it immediately.

The sensation is very different from standard offensive blades.

When opponents loop hard against you, especially with heavy topspin, the blade seems to “take away” a huge amount of incoming energy. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by the shot, the ball lands softly and controllably on the racket.

Honestly, the first few times it happened, it felt strange.

Even against strong looping attacks:

  • Blocks stayed low
  • The ball remained stable
  • Control never felt out of hand

That ultra-thick balsa core creates an almost unmatched “shock absorption” effect.

Defensive Play Feels Effortless

This is where the blade becomes dangerous.

For defensive players—or anyone using disruptive rubbers—the Soft Punch gives a level of stability that makes returning difficult balls surprisingly easy.

Especially with:

  • Long pimples
  • Short pimples
  • Combination bat setups

the blade feels incredibly natural.

From my own experience, this is probably one of the best blades I’ve used for pairing with long pimple or pimple-out rubbers.

The soft core and controlled rebound make it very difficult for opponents to break through consistently.

You don’t feel rushed.
You don’t feel overpowered.
You simply redirect and absorb.

Not Just Defensive

Despite the heavy defensive character, the blade is not completely passive.

The dyed limba surface adds a bit of directness and “first speed” when you attack.

That means:

  • Flicks still feel sharp
  • Counter-hits have enough penetration
  • Sudden attacks can catch opponents off guard

It’s not a fast offensive blade by modern standards, but it has enough speed to make your attacks meaningful when the opportunity appears.

And honestly, that contrast is what makes it effective.

Opponents get used to the soft defensive rhythm, then suddenly the blade produces a surprisingly crisp counter.

Touch and Placement

The combination of:

  • Koto outer layer
  • Spruce second ply

gives the blade very good feedback in the short game.

This shows up especially in:

  • Pushes
  • Chop blocks
  • Passive placement shots

You can feel the ball clearly without the blade becoming overly hard or rigid.

For a thick balsa blade, the touch is actually better than I expected.

The Handle Is Underrated

One small detail I ended up appreciating over time was the slimmed ergonomic handle.

Because defensive rallies can become long and repetitive, comfort matters more than people think.

The handle:

  • Feels secure
  • Reduces hand fatigue
  • Makes grip transitions easier

After long sessions, that comfort becomes noticeable.

Who This Blade Is Really For

After 6 months, I’d say the Two Face – Soft Punch is ideal for:

  • Defensive players
  • Combination bat users
  • Long pimple and short pimple players
  • Players who rely on variation, placement, and disruption

It’s probably not suited for:

  • Pure two-wing loopers
  • Players who want maximum speed and directness

Final Thoughts

The SANWEI Two Face – Soft Punch is one of those blades that serves a very specific purpose—and does it extremely well.

What stood out most to me was:

  • The incredible energy absorption from the thick balsa core
  • The ease of blocking heavy loops
  • The synergy with pimple rubbers

Against aggressive opponents, it creates a very frustrating rhythm. Their power never fully comes through, and rallies slowly shift into your control.

And while it’s clearly built around defense, it still has enough offensive capability to punish weak balls when needed.

For players who enjoy tactical control, disruption, and defensive stability, this blade has a very unique character that’s difficult to replace once you get used to it.
