In December 1926, London hosted the World Table Tennis Championships, which was the culmination of the ITTF’s first International Tournament in Berlin.the ITTF implemented several rule changes at the end of the year 2000 to make table tennis a more attractive spectator sport. The old 38mm balls were replaced with 40mm ones.Increasing the air resistance of the ball slowed the game down. The ITTF relocated its Hastings headquarters to Lausanne in 2003 and established the ITTF Museum.

The ITTF took over the para table tennis governance in 2007. After an ITTF executive meeting held in Guangzhou (Guangdong), China, several rule changes were announced regarding a player’s eligibility to join a new association. This new rule was designed to encourage associations in developing their own players.

Petra Sorling, a Swedish national, is the current president. Sorling is the current president of the ITTF. She was elected in 2021.
