I’ve Used a Traditional FL Handle for Years. Why Should I Try the Pistol Racket?

This is probably one of the questions I hear most often.

“Mr. Su, I’ve been using a traditional FL handle for years. It feels natural to me. Why should I change?”

My answer is always the same:

You don’t have to change. But if there is a design that allows your body to move more naturally, isn’t it worth trying?

Innovation doesn’t exist to replace tradition.

It exists to improve it.

The FL Handle Is a Great Design

First of all, let me say this clearly.

The traditional FL (Flared) handle is one of the greatest handle designs in table tennis history.

Millions of players, from beginners to World Champions, have used it successfully.

If you have played with an FL handle for years, it is perfectly normal to feel comfortable with it.

After all, your muscles have adapted to it through thousands of hours of practice.

But Being Familiar Doesn’t Always Mean It’s the Best Fit

Think about running shoes.

If you’ve worn the same model for ten years, a newer design may feel unusual at first.

That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s worse.

Sometimes it simply means your body has become accustomed to the old design.

The same applies to table tennis.

Many players have never questioned their grip because they have never experienced an alternative.

Why I Developed the Pistol Racket

When I started designing the Pistol Racket, I wasn’t trying to create something that looked different.

I wanted to answer a simple question:

Can a racket become a more natural extension of the player’s arm?

After years of observing players, I noticed that the traditional FL handle often requires subtle wrist compensation to keep the racket in the ideal hitting position.

Experienced players don’t even notice these adjustments anymore.

But they are still there.

So I asked myself:

“What if the handle could do part of that work instead?”

A Handle That Follows the Forearm

The biggest difference with the Pistol Racket is its handle orientation.

Instead of placing the racket in the traditional position, the design brings the hitting point closer to the extension line of the forearm.

This means the racket follows the natural direction of your arm more closely.

As a result, many players immediately notice that their strokes feel more intuitive.

Rather than “holding” the racket, they feel as though they are simply extending their arm toward the ball.

More Efficient Power, Less Unnecessary Compensation

When the racket is better aligned with your arm, force can be transferred more directly through the forearm into the ball.

That doesn’t mean the racket magically creates more power.

It means less of the power you generate is lost through unnecessary adjustments in the wrist and grip.

Many players who switch to the Pistol Racket tell me they feel:

  • A more natural swing path.
  • Better stability during impact.
  • Easier acceleration through the ball.
  • More confidence during powerful forehand attacks.

These improvements don’t come from working harder.

They come from moving more naturally.

Think of It as an Evolution, Not a Replacement

I never designed the Pistol Racket to replace the FL handle.

I designed it because I believe equipment should evolve alongside technique.

The FL handle has served generations of players remarkably well.

The Pistol Racket is my attempt to build on that foundation using what I have learned from decades of coaching, designing, and listening to players.

In that sense, I see it as the next step in the evolution of the shakehand grip—not a rejection of the past.

Should Every FL Player Switch?

Not necessarily.

If your current racket feels perfect and helps you perform your best, there is no reason to force a change.

But if you have ever experienced:

  • Wrist fatigue after long training sessions.
  • Difficulty finding a comfortable grip.
  • Inconsistent racket angles.
  • A feeling that your forehand power isn’t fully transferring into the ball.

Then I believe the Pistol Racket is worth experiencing.

Sometimes, one small change in how the racket fits your hand can completely change how the game feels.

Final Thoughts

After more than 30 years of designing table tennis equipment, I have learned one important lesson:

Players should not adapt to equipment forever.

Sometimes, equipment should adapt to the player.

That is the philosophy behind the SANWEI Pistol Racket.

Not to replace the classic FL handle.

But to take what has already proven successful and refine it with a more ergonomic design, one that follows the natural extension of the forearm, promotes a more efficient transfer of power, and helps the racket feel like a true extension of your body.

For me, that is what innovation is all about.
