Table tennis Asia Cup: Chinese table tennis team opens the door! Sun Yingsha wins 3-0, Qiu Yike guides calmly

On 19 February, the 2025 Table Tennis Asia Cup officially kicked off in Shenzhen, China, with women’s singles world No. 1 Sun Yingsha taking the lead on behalf of the Chinese table tennis team, facing Chinese Taipei’s Jane Tongjuan in her group stage debut, resulting in Sun winning the opening match with an absolute advantage of 3-0, and off-court instructor coach Qiu Yike calm and collected himself, clearly trusting in his protégé’s abilities, see below for details of the battle.

Sun Yingsha is the core mainstay of the Chinese table tennis team, having won the World Cup, World Cup, Asian Games, Asian Championships, All-Championships singles championships, just one step away from the Grand Slam, the world ranking has long ranked first in the women’s singles.

Due to the suspension of the Asia Cup, Sun has never participated in the tournament and naturally did not have a chance to win the gold medal. However, she is undoubtedly the biggest favourite to win the women’s singles title in this year’s tournament, and with her recent ascent to the top of the WTT Singapore Grand Slam, it was widely believed that Jane Tongjuan, who has a mediocre record, would be difficult to pose a threat to her in her first match.

At the start of the match, Sun started quickly, forcing Jane Tongjuan to play her fast attacking skills in the near table by looping her shots, and at the same time, she was able to use her own fast hitting to her advantage, suppressing her opponent in almost every aspect of the game.

In the second set, Jian Tongjuan still couldn’t find many ways to win the game, but in the second half of the set, Sun made some mistakes and was restricted by her opponent’s left-handed attack in the middle of the court. She kept on taking the lead and was trailed by only one point at 9-8, but then she stood firm and scored two points in a row to win the game again at 11-8.

In the third set, Jian Tongjuan scored the first point and then quickly tied the game. Sun Yingsha gradually took the lead and suppressed her opponent to finish the game 11-6, thus winning her first Chinese table tennis team victory 3-0 without too much difficulty.

Although Sun Yingsha is an athlete of the Hebei Province team, she has been representing Shenzhen University Club in the Bing Super League in recent years, so she has a high popularity in Shenzhen, and this tournament can be said to be the right place at the right time, so I expect her to play well and strive for the first Asian Cup singles title of her career.
