This time, Lin Shidong won 4-0 and had the last laugh, as did women’s singles player Sun Yingsha (4-2 win over teammate Wang Yidi in the final), and the Chinese team thus took all the two titles in this tournament, see below for more information on the battle.

Match highlights

Lin Sidong, born in 2005, is one of the most outstanding performers among the Chinese table tennis team’s new stars. He beat Xu Xin, the team’s mainstay, before the start of the Tokyo Olympics, and then beat Fan Zhendong, Wang Chuqin, Liang Jingkun and Lin Gaoyuan, etc. He won three consecutive championships in Almaty before the start of the tournament, and then beat three top players Harimoto Tomokazu, Lin Yunru, and Wang Chuqin again in Macao.

The Road to Promotion

Lin got through the first round with ease, sweeping German star Duda 3-0, before narrowly missing out in the second round, and then knocking out Japanese No.1 Harimoto Tomokazu 3-2 after a hard fought 5-game match, followed by a 3-0 win over Chinese Taipei’s Lin Yunru in the third round, and then defeating world No.1 teammate Wang Chuqin 4-1 in the semi-finals, also in a relatively easy win.

Qiu had a tougher road, eliminating South Korean star Lim Jong-hoon 3-1 in the first round, narrowly defeating Swedish world champion Falk 3-2 in the second round, coming back from 0-2 down to beat Chinese table tennis team leader Liang Jingkun 3-2 in the third round, and then overturning a 4-2 deficit in the semi-finals, eliminating Chinese table tennis team star Gao Chengyuei, who beat Lin Gaoyuan, to reach the final and battle with Lin Sidong for the men’s singles title.

How the match unfolded

Lin started the match badly, losing 2 points in a row, and was disrupted by Qiu’s quick hands, but soon showed his strong looping power, quickly reversing the situation and forcing Qiu to lose his own serve, and then scored 7 points in a row to beat his opponent’s defence, and finally won the match 11-5, showing his excellent technical and psychological qualities.

In the second set, Lin Shidong was still firmly in control of the court, and was fully prepared for Qiu’s attack. Whenever he had the chance, he took the lead and formed a situation of ‘playing both sides of the court’, and soon got as many as 5 set points, and then continued to expand the score with another 11-7 victory, which was very easy to win.

As Liang Jingkun had previously lost 3 games in a row to Qiu after leading 2-0, Lin Shidong, who was also leading 2-0 in the final, did not dare to be careless. In the third set, Lin scored 3 points in a row, forcing the German team to call for a timeout to make adjustments, and then Qiu Party chased down the match to only 2 points short of the lead, and Coach Wang Hao used his timeout right, and finally Lin took the win 11-8, successfully forcing his opponent into a desperate situation.

In the fourth game, Qiu Party was able to put some pressure on Lin Shidong by picking up the ball inside the table, and he was able to level the score after falling behind in the opening game. At the crucial moment, Lin Shidong continued to score through high quality looping, pulling through Qiu Party’s defence on both lines, and finally ended the whole game with 11-8, and thus he won his fourth Chinese table tennis team title in the Los Angeles Olympics cycle: the Chinese table tennis team has a new generation of champions, which is something to be happy about!
