World Table Tennis Championships

The table tennis competition organized by the International Table Tennis Federation is open to participants from any member association. Currently, there are 182 member countries, making it one of the largest-scale events in the world. The World Table Tennis Championships, which held its first edition in London, United Kingdom in 1926, has been held 47 times to date (the 47th edition only featured individual events), with the competition taking place every two years. Starting from the 47th edition in 2003, the ITTF decided to separate individual and team events. The World Table Tennis Championships feature a total of 7 events, each with its own dedicated trophy, and the trophies are donated and named after the donor or their country.

All the trophies at the World Table Tennis Championships are mobile, with the names of the winners being engraved on the trophies. Each champion can keep the trophy until the next edition of the World Table Tennis Championships. If a male or female singles champion wins the “St. Bride Goblet” three times in a row or the “G. Geist Cup” four times in a row, the ITTF will create a replica of the original trophy that is less than half the size, which will be permanently held by the winner. All 7 trophies at the World Table Tennis Championships are made of silver.

The World Cup Table Tennis, also known as the “Evens Cup,” is a table tennis competition organized by the International Table Tennis Federation. The first edition was held in Hong Kong in 1980, and it has been held annually since then, with 23 editions to date. In the 1980s, there was only the men’s singles event, with 16 players designated by the ITTF based on their qualifications as world singles champions, continental singles champions, host association singles champions, and top-ranked players on the ITTF’s list of world outstanding players.

The competition consists of a group round-robin stage in the first phase, followed by a single-elimination stage with additional matches to determine the top 1-16 positions. In 1990, the World Cup added men’s and women’s team events and doubles events. The inaugural team event was held in four cities in Japan: Tokyo, Aomori, Niigata, and Shibetsu, with 12 women’s teams and 16 men’s teams selected by the ITTF based on the top 16 world team rankings. The competition format included a group round-robin stage in the first phase and a single-elimination stage in the second phase. In 1996, the women’s singles event was added, featuring 16 players with the same qualification and competition format as the men’s singles, and has since been held for 6 editions.
The World Cup is characterized by its short duration, high level of play, and exciting matches, making it popular and well-loved by audiences.
