Wang Yidi still has work to do: 7 losses to Japanese players in 2 years, 3 defeats this year

In the recently concluded table tennis Asian Championships women’s final, the Chinese table tennis team 1-3 defeat against the Japanese team, no chance to renew the project’s successive championship legend, which the three world champions Wang Yidi, Chen Xingtong, Sun Yingsha all appeared to lose points, only Sun Yingsha won a game, which is regrettable.

In the above three main Chinese table tennis team, Wang Yidi is both the first player on the field and lost, but also the worst record against the Japanese players: since March 2023 to date, Wang Yidi in less than two years, seven times against the Japanese athletes, this year has already happened three times, and in the World Table tennis, World Cup, Asian Championships such as the major competitions, almost to the Japanese women’s team’s main strength of the loss of a whole, indeed, still need to work hard! !

Born in 1997, Wang Yidi is the representative of the Chinese table tennis team’s late success, until the age of 22 is still a non-starter, but who would have thought that she is now repeatedly losing to Japanese athletes, and the key to her rise that year is to beat Japanese players – 2019 China Hong Kong Open, Wang Yidi in the case of not being favoured to become the only Chinese table tennis team to play into the Women’s singles eight athletes, and then continued to pass through to the quarter-finals and finals, and finally swept Misaki Ito 4-0 to win the title.

Please note that Misaki Ito was not the same as she is now, and almost all of the Chinese table tennis team’s main players were ‘beaten through’, defeating Ding Ning, Liu Shiwen, Zhu Yuling, Sun Yingsha, Wang Manyu, and Chen Xingtong, but was ‘cleaned up’ by the non-main player, Wang Yidi.

It is by virtue of the victory against Ito Misheng, Wang Yidi began to gradually get the coaching staff to reuse and in 2021 officially on the throne, become the women’s team, one of the five main force, to 2023, Wang Yidi once hoped to replace the injury-prone Wang Manyu, to become the core of the top three and the impact of the qualification of the Paris Olympics, in the team to get a lot of big game singles opportunities, the results ushered in the Japanese players of the successive blows:

2023 WTT Singapore Smash: Wang Yidi lost 2-3 to Hirano Miyu;
2023 WTT Durban: Wang Yidi lost 3-4 to Kina Hayada;
2023 Hangzhou Asian Games: Wang Yidi lost 3-4 to Kina Hayada;
2023 WTT Lanzhou Ballon d’Or: Wang Yidi lost to Miyu Kihara 0-3;
2024 World Tournament in Busan: Wang Yidi lost 0-3 to Hirano Miyu.

After the above five defeats, Wang Yidi was very rarely taken out of contention for an Olympic singles ticket directly by the Chinese table tennis team, however, after this, Wang Yidi once again suffered a defeat against a Japanese player:

2024 Macau World Cup: Wang Yidi lost 1-4 to Miwa Harimoto;
2024 Astana Asian Championships: Wang Yidi lost 2-3 to Miwa Harimoto.
In less than two years before and after this, Wang Yidi was broken by four of Japan’s top five starters – Hina Hayata, Mayu Hirano, Miwa Zhang, Mayu Kihara – and only kept a clean sweep against Misaki Ito; but in fact, in the early years, Wang Yidi also lost to Misaki Ito, which means that the above five have all won against her, and this record is indeed the most impressive among the mainstays of the Chinese table tennis team at the moment. This record is indeed ‘unique’ among the main force of the current national ping team.

Through the confrontation with Japanese players, fans did see the deficiencies in Wang Yidi, such as relying too much on close table backhand attack, but in fact she did not have much advantage in meeting the Japanese players who are good at backhand; the adaptability in the game is a little bit insufficient, and it is difficult to find a chance to win the game from the other links, especially from the forehand position which is favourable to the Japanese players after being restricted to the speciality.

In the case of Chen Meng gradually faded out of the game, delayed return, and a clear statement will not participate in the Los Angeles Olympic Games, Wang Yidi is still an important candidate for the Chinese table tennis team to participate in the next Olympic Games, it is inevitable that they will continue to compete with the Japanese players, and we expect her to seriously sum up the experience of the above losses and lessons learned, and strive for the next time to get the victory.
