WTT China Grand Slam: Wang Chuqin on Fire Again! Another 3–0 Sweep Over Korean Star, Sets Up Clash With Japanese Rival

On the evening of October 2, Beijing time, the WTT China Grand Slam once again staged a blockbuster showdown. World No. 1 Wang Chuqin, who swept Korean mainstay Jang Woojin 3–0 in the first round, faced another strong Korean player—2019 World Championships men’s singles bronze medalist Ahn Jaehyun. Once again, Wang stormed to a 3–0 victory, securing his place in the quarterfinals. In the next round, he will meet Japanese rival Matsushima Hiromu, who eliminated Wang’s teammate Liang Jingkun. Full match report below.

【Match Highlights】

Wang Chuqin, born in 2000, is currently ranked world No. 1. Ahn Jaehyun, born in 1999, is ranked No. 13. Although close in age, their achievements differ greatly: Wang is a World Championships singles champion and runner-up, as well as a World Cup bronze medalist. Ahn’s career highlight remains his 2019 World Championships bronze in singles, with no comparable results since.

Before this match, Wang held a commanding 6–0 head-to-head record against Ahn. Moreover, in the first round, Wang swept Jang Woojin—whose playing style is similar to Ahn’s—demonstrating excellent form. Therefore, most believed Wang was highly likely to advance. However, as Ahn has defeated top players such as Liang Jingkun in the past, he could not be underestimated.

【Match Process】

In the opening game, Wang played strongly in the first half, using his all-around skills to pressure Ahn, whose forehand is stronger than his backhand. Ahn countered unexpectedly with his backhand to close the gap. From 8–4 up, Wang was caught at 9–9, but he held firm at the critical moment, taking two points in a row to seal it 11–9 and grab the first game.

In the second game, Ahn opened with powerful forehand attacks and scored the first point. But Wang quickly turned the tide, using his serve and early attacks to dismantle Ahn’s defense. He surged ahead 8–3, then, after missing one point, reeled off two more to reach 10–4 with six game points. He wrapped it up 11–4, putting Ahn on the brink of elimination.

In the third game, Ahn went all out, attacking recklessly with maximum force regardless of position. His points came quickly, but so did his errors. He was even faulted for a service toss, though a Hawk-Eye challenge restored one point. Back in play, Wang kept his composure, striking aggressively to lead 5–2, forcing Ahn to call a timeout.

After the restart, Wang committed errors and lost three points in a row, allowing Ahn to tie at 5–5. But Wang immediately responded with a service point and a heavy topspin winner to pull ahead again. He kept control, moving to 9–6, then 10–7 with three match points, and finally closed it out 11–7. With that, Wang completed another straight-sets win over a Korean mainstay, advancing to the men’s singles quarterfinals. Next, he will face Matsushima Hiromu for a spot in the semifinals, with fans eager to see if he can continue his dominant form.
