WTT China Grand Slam: Wang Manyu on Fire! 3–0 Sweep Over Hina Hayata, Advances to Face Miwa Harimoto

On the evening of October 2, Beijing time, the WTT China Grand Slam once again staged a clash between the Chinese Table Tennis Team and Japan’s main force. Olympic champion Wang Manyu took the stage against long-time rival Hina Hayata. Unlike their last encounter, where Wang Manyu had to pull off a tough 3–2 comeback, this time she stormed to a 3–0 victory in rapid fashion. With this win, she advanced to the women’s singles quarterfinals, where she will next face another Japanese mainstay, Miwa Harimoto. Full match details below.

【Match Highlights】

Wang Manyu, born in 1999, is currently ranked world No. 2. Hina Hayata, born in 2000, was once a fixture in the world’s top 10 but has recently slipped to No. 13 due to a decline in results. During the Paris Olympic cycle, Hayata performed well, becoming the top rival of China’s women’s team, even winning singles bronze medals at both the Olympics and World Championships. However, against the Chinese main players, her record has been far more losses than wins.

In her four past encounters with Wang Manyu, Hayata had lost every time. Most recently, just last month, she twice led but was overturned 2–3, nearly breaking through. That close call meant Wang Manyu had to be fully prepared for another fierce challenge this time.

【Match Process】

Right from the start, Wang Manyu played brilliantly in the opening game. She quickly overwhelmed Hayata and surged to a 10–3 lead with seven game points in hand. Although she made a few errors and conceded three points in a row, she soon regained composure, closed out the game, and secured an 11–6 win with relative ease.

In the second game, Hayata fought hard in the early stages and put Wang under pressure. However, after briefly taking the lead, she was soon disrupted by Wang’s counterattacks and fell behind. Once again, Wang Manyu established a commanding 10–3 lead, and this time she only squandered one game point before sealing it 11–4, extending her advantage to 2–0 and moving within reach of victory.

In the third game, Wang Manyu went up 5–2, forcing Hayata to call a timeout. After the pause, Wang maintained her momentum, pulled away to 10–4 with six match points in hand, and closed out 11–5 after conceding just one more point. With this, she completed a clean 3–0 sweep to advance.

As noted, in their previous encounter just last month, Wang Manyu had narrowly avoided defeat against Hayata. Yet within such a short time, she adjusted her form, and this time she won with remarkable ease. This shows she carefully reviewed and learned from that close call. Next, Wang Manyu will meet Japanese star Miwa Harimoto in the quarterfinals, where fans eagerly await another strong performance.
