🏆 What Is the WTT Grand Smash?

The WTT Grand Smash is the highest-tier tournament under the World Table Tennis event structure. With a champion earning up to 2,000 ranking points, it ranks on par with the Olympic Games and the World Championships, making it one of the most anticipated events in the sport.

After previous editions held in Singapore, Saudi Arabia, and China, the 2025 Grand Smashes will debut in the Americas and Europe, with the United States and Sweden as this year’s hosts.

Due to the long travel distance and the recent conclusion of the Chinese Super League in June, Team China has opted out of other international events this month to focus solely on preparation for the Grand Smash, where they’ll aim to contest all five titles.

🧩 Roster Adjustments and Tactical Moves

The current entry list includes 16 Chinese players, forming 5 doubles pairs. Of note, Xu Yi, Wang Chuqin / Liang Jingkun, and Wang Yidi / Kuai Man are new additions, while the rest were confirmed earlier.

This lineup brings together all 9 current active Chinese world champions, including Lin Shidong, Wang Chuqin, Liang Jingkun, Lin Gaoyuan, Sun Yingsha, Wang Manyu, Chen Xingtong, Wang Yidi, and Kuai Man. Alongside them are several high-performing non-core players, giving the team a solid chance to sweep the event.

🔄 New Pairings Worth Watching

China’s doubles combinations have seen some notable reshuffling:

  • Lin Shidong / Huang Youzheng — a relatively experimental pair

  • Wang Chuqin / Liang Jingkun — an old but rarely used combination

  • Sun Yingsha / Wang Manyu — a former world champion duo reunited

  • Wang Yidi / Kuai Man — reuniting after a long break

  • Lin Shidong / Kuai Man — currently China’s top mixed pair

Notably, Wang Chuqin / Sun Yingsha, one of China’s top mixed pairs, will not compete in this event.

With the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics set to bring back men’s and women’s doubles as medal events, all major table tennis nations, including China, are testing various pairings to find the most effective combinations. The WTT Grand Smash will serve as a key testing ground.
